Welcome to Larger View

Everyone needs a larger view. More awareness. A willingness to learn and grow. An increased capacity for understanding truth. One that leads to greater love for God and fellow human beings.

Larger View

My personal need to examine and articulate my own views gave birth to this website blog. In fact, sharing beliefs remains a foundation that informs my worldview and helps enlarge my focus far beyond myself. I’m asking you to consider and share this site and comments if you find they add value to your journey.

I’ve heard that “silence is golden.” Although there may be a proper time to hold one’s tongue (and keyboard), we should not remain silent in a world awash with notions that destroy the soul and erode truth. We cannot abandon our responsibility for influencing others with good news.

Our world needs persons of good faith to discuss ultimate questions that have always challenged thinking men and women:

  • What are we?
  • How did we get here?
  • Where are we going?
  • What is our purpose?

Even more so, the world need to hear from those who propose sound answers. I hope this site helps advance the quest for a larger view.

I am painfully aware that increased knowledge has not brought me to the summit of wisdom. Instead, larger views reveal another layer of personal ignorance as it exposes more than I previously understood. There is so much I do not know about our universe and reality. There are mysteries I cannot comprehend. And I am not ashamed to admit that fact. I am sure that many of you may quickly detect weaknesses or flaws in my comments and approaches. Others will accept the challenge to examine and articulate your own views as well. So, I invite fellow travelers to participate with respectful, civil dialogue.

This website is one of many that informs internet readers. But most writers intentionally reject online discourse on their sites by omitting space for viewer comments. I understand the move. The internet cranks, skeptics and heresy stalkers relish in such opportunities to pummel others with public insults, mockery and ridicule. But I will not allow the feared symptoms to frustrate us from advancing the cure. I invite honest disagreement but will moderate or eliminate comments that appear abusive or factious.

The risk of attempted hijack is worth the benefits of connecting with kindred souls. Discussions between reasonable and unreasonable beliefs must be engaged. What we believe drives our behavior and directs our future. As you will see, I believe words penned two thousand years ago, “For God so loved the world that he gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.” You may not agree with this revelation or may have never understood this good news, so come let us reason together.

I hope that persons from all perspectives will join the discussion. So, let’s drill down and look up. The variety of beliefs stretches beyond left and right - Democrats, Republicans, and those with no party preference. Sharp contrasts exist between those who believe in a creator God and those who profess to be atheists or agnostics. Those who believe in supernatural realities hold divergent views about the divine. Why do humans hold such different beliefs? And what should we do about it, especially when some demonstrate malignant intent? We must find ways to influence - ways that woo their hearts and minds. But such victories are not won by suppressing dissent, shooting bullets, or dropping bombs.

Sadly, those of us who profess belief in God’s Son often behave in ways that contradict our foundation. As a result, others reject truth based on perceived and real hypocrisy of those who fall short of the ideal. Followers of Jesus Christ need honest evaluation. Sometimes the perspectives of our critics are right. We need a larger view as well.

I hope this site will help us understand more as we reason together. Reasonable beliefs can nurture our soul on the journey. And finding the ultimate divine purpose of One who made creatures in the image of God remains the largest view of all.

Who darkens your counsel?

“Who is this who darkens counsel by words without knowledge?” God spoke these words in the 38th chapter of the book of Job in the Old Testament after Job and his “friends” discussed, accused, and argued about why God caused or allowed Job’s suffering. They reached no consensus. No agreement. No resolution of the question.…

My Momma Said…

No one appreciates attacks to their worldview! When a college professor asked about the scientific reason for alligator aggression, Bobby Boucher (the character played by Adam Sandler in The Water Boy) replied, “Mama says that alligators are ornery ’cause they got all them teeth but no tooth brush.” The entire class erupted in laughter. Then…

I Didn’t Like Him At All

I don’t like that man. I must get to know him better. – Abraham Lincoln What a fine two-sentence sermon. Lots of my friends gave me bad first impressions. At first blush, they seemed cold. No firm handshake. Not my type. They instantly put me on the defense or rubbed me the wrong way. I…

Silenced and Slain by Ridicule?

Why should anyone respect scientific or theological perspectives presented by a trial lawyer? Good question. Hold on. You might let your guard down. I claim no expertise in biology, cosmology, or other scientific fields. Although I’ve spent a lifetime studying God’s word, I possess no theological doctorate degrees. However, I have labored more than thirty…

Triage – In light of eternity?

Wars wound bodies as well as minds. Multitudes fall victim to unleashed weapons – the bullets, bombs and bayonets.  But all humans bear the brunt of struggles over beliefs. In the wars over ideas, no one escapes the violence and collateral damage. Advocates and victims ring out like wind chimes clanging in a thunder storm.…

Captives

Prisoners of beliefs – Captives in one’s own mind. But who remains imprisoned? “Us” or “Them”? And how does one lead others to find freedom? In reading numerous books written by strident atheists, I’ve noticed many of the same techniques used by those who engage with weapons of political persuasion. When partisans and advocates wage…
